So say I've got an AEG that's really nice and shoots great, but chronos at 390 FPS. Can I, say, remove the spring and compress it in a vise for a few days to reduce the "yield" of it, thereby reducing the velocity to an extent where it will be acceptable at KA?

It might work. New springs cost like 5$ and installation is 5$.

If you go to KA, they just have new springs that they can install for a small fee. Springs have to be compressed for months before they start losing shape.

These guys are right. A new spring is your best option.

If you don't know how to do so, there are a couple guys at KA who can do it.
