Airsoft is one of those things that until you expierence it, you really have no idea what it is. Most people's point of reference for airsoft is screwing around with springer pistols in thier backyard, so it's hard to see it as anything that resembles a sport.
Do what I do, when you tell someone, pull out your phone and show them some awesome pictures of guys at the airhouse, then show them the welts that look like cigarette burns.

I love airsoft and have been playing for nearly 2 years, and I wouldn't necessarily call it a sport. I think of it more as a hobby with demanding physical requirements.

To me anything that requires an immense amount of physical activity is a sport. Look at some of the "sports" in the Olympics. However, it doesn't have a professional league like it's per say competitor paintball. This doesn't make it not a sport though, by pure definition of the word sport airsoft fits the bill.
Definition of sport from your friendly Google search!
Sport Noun: An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.

To me I always consider airsoft to have more in common with Battlefield and Call of Duty with paintball. Battlefield like airsoft is more tactical, team work oriented and more of a military simulation type of thing. Paintball is run shoot, run shoot, spray ammo and continue, speed ball is like this, which is the most popular variation of paintball which makes me thing of COD.
I can see comparisons for both, but eh, everyone has there opinion and so on.

There are some hardcore players down here in Missouri! We have MAKO, SABRE, Mil Spec, American MilSim with OK Invasion very nearby (which is in Oklahoma, but enough players up here go to it that it's a common event here), and the list goes on.
From playing both in Michigan and Missouri I think Michigan is more recreational. I hate to be a buzz kill, but I get a more "CoD" feeling whenever I play in Michigan. The field that I'm a regular at is definitely more MilSim oriented. The field is an abandoned missle facility with 7 or 8 buildings so we do A LOT of room to room and breaching procedures in every match.
I've seen some "MilSim" style paintball events online. More players are starting to get the gear that MilSim airsofters get. So I'm seeing Paintball really stepping up recently.
But to answer the original post: I don't see airsoft as a sport, never did. I see it solely as a hobby, and I put over 4 years into it.
