Is it the fact that it is LiPo, or the high voltage in the battery that kills you gun?

It is the high voltage to my understanding.

It is the perception of the person. You would get the same results from throwing a larger NimH pack or a car battery in your gun. More powerful batteries cycle the gearbox faster, making the gearbox cycle more revolutions per unit time, and with a bit more stress in the system.
This isnt necessarily 100% accurate, but for discussion sake, lets say a stock AEG gearbox is destined for 50,000 rounds before it breaks down. Using a stock 8.4 battery it may take a year to shoot that many rounds. However, using a LiPo makes your gun shoot (for simplicity sake) 1.5 times faster. That means your gearbox will only last about 8 months.
So your gun was not broken faster by the LiPo, rather it shot the amount of rounds quicker, giving the perception that it broke faster.
I will repeat, that analogy was just rough, easy to calculate figures and in no way, shape, or form is it accurate.

I also would never put a lipo on a gun that was not designed for a lipo- -If the gun is lipo ready then great, most lipo guns have a safe level cut off system that shuts down if the battery gets to low. If you take a Nickel metal or nicad down to zero percent you can just charge it, but if you take a Lipo to zero you may ruin it permanently or seriously hurt the performance and lifetime of the lipo.

Actually the term LiPo ready for an Airsoft gun is just a marketing sham. There are only a few after market options out there for LiPo protection, but as far as I know, not a single one comes stock in a gun.
When it comes to LiPos, if you feel your gun slowing, stop shooting. That is if you haven't bought circuitry.

Well thanks for answering my question guys, and Mav, would you be talking MOSFETs by any chance?

There are some MOSFET units that do the job, but they are the expensive computerized ones. Other products are ones such as the Burst Wizard, Avacado (not good), and low battery alarms.
