I just about have the Bride convinced to let me get into airsoft. You married guys know what I am talking about!!! Anyways I am pretty sure I am going with the G&G Raider and my questions are:
1. Since I will stay stock for a bit to make sure I really want to get into airsoft should I stick with a 9.6 NimH versus a Lipo? I know Lipos will wake up the gun but will it overpower a stock gearbox? 2. What should I look for as far as features in a charger? I plan on a smart charger but how smart do I need?
Thanks all.

I would say get a lipo if you like the sport but just to start out with get the 9.6nvh, and for the charger all you need is a universal smart charger so if you change connectors you would has to change your charger or buy a new one.

DO NOT LISTEN TO SANDMAN! A standard g&g raider wont be able to handle a lipo for long. Just get a 9.6 butterfly with any smart charger. But whatever you do, DON'T PUT A LIPO IN YOUR G&G RAIDER. It'll burn your trigger contacts in 2000-3000 shots. A 7.4 lipo is just as strong as a 9.6 regular, and people say they do no damage but its going to be a hasle. A lipo charger will be about $40-60. Its more cost effective and safer to stay with standard 9.6 volt battery's.

Sandman: He just said he's gonna run a standard g&g raider for the time being, and what kind of battery he shoud use right now. You also failed to mention upgrades in your original post. Make sure you read everything before posting.

Alright, before someone starts a b****ing contest I started of with a standard raider myself. For a battery if I were you I would get a simple 9.6v 1600mah butterfly/ nun-chuck battery ($25). These will fit nicely into a crane stock this will also fit nice in a front wired m4. For a changer just get a tenergy universal smart charger these run like $30.
DO NOT GET A LiPo BATTERY! The energy output from a LiPo will tear your gearbox up faster than you can say uh-oh. You should NEVER run a LiPo in a stock gun, even if the manufacturer says "LiPo ready!" It's just a gimmick.
Something else to strongly consider is what bb's to use. I personally run elite force .25g bios. If you're just getting into airsoft make sure when you buy bb's they are .20gram, SEAMLESS bb's.
Hope I helped.

Already plan on at least .20 bios. My son runs them in his guns with no issues

Nascar, .25's are generally considered the most well-rounded bb to use. I would recommend them over .20's
The added weight creates better backspin and overall more consistent shots.

Already plan on at least .20 bios. My son runs them in his guns with no issues Asking why would you use bio's? There are not a whole lot of events or fields for that matter that even use bio's, a lot is due to the cost and lower number of bb's per bag. As for me along with what Sham said, I use .23g and .25g and never have had a problem.

We been using bios so far because we been playing in the woods behind our house. I can see where the bio is useless in a place like the airhouse as I assume they clean up every so often.
With .23+ I am assuming to little lose in fps is made up for in accuracy??? With paintball there were no options. It was mostly accuracy by volume

With a .23g bob the fps that you would lose is so minute it doesn't matter you'd lose maybe 3-6 fps. When I switched from .2 to .25 I think I lost 7 fps give or take but that can easily be made up with a tight bore barrel.

With the whole FPS thing, you might as well switch to .25s. The kinect energy delivered by the bb is a margin of change, and the wind has a smaller affect on the bb travel the higher the weight. It's better to use .25s, as Sham has stated, because the consistency of the grouping surpasses the speed of each bb.
